Baby Teeth Treatment at Your Pediatric Dentist in Munich
We preserve your child’s baby teeth for as long as possible
Your child’s baby teeth play a crucial role in the development of their permanent teeth and jaw. They’re not just placeholders – their health directly affects the health of the adult teeth that follow. If a baby tooth becomes severely infected, the inflammation can spread to the underlying permanent tooth bud.
At Zahn im Glück in Munich, we care for your child’s baby teeth with a variety of treatment approaches:
Preventive Therapy at Your Pediatric Dentist – Zahn im Glück in Munich
Prevention is the best protection against cavities
First, we teach our young patients how to brush properly and talk to them about their eating habits. Even from infancy, healthy nutrition can help prevent tooth decay. And yes – even little sweet tooths don’t have to miss out! A tooth-friendly diet is anything but boring and surprisingly easy to follow.

Treating Baby Teeth – Gentle Care at Zahn im Glück
Early-stage tooth decay – no drilling needed!
Thanks to regular preventive care, we often detect cavities in their earliest stages. In many cases, there’s no need to drill. If we spot white spots (demineralization), indicating early caries, we can polish the area and apply a fluoride varnish to help the enamel remineralize. This gentle method is only possible if the demineralization hasn’t yet broken through the enamel surface.
Advanced decay in baby teeth

Fillings for Baby Teeth – in Munich
If the decay has progressed to the point where drilling is necessary, we use only well-tolerated, high-quality materials for our fillings. We’ll gladly explain the options and help you choose the most suitable filling material for your child’s needs. (More in our blog post on baby tooth fillings.)
Crowns for Baby Teeth
In some cases, children come to us when the cavity is already too large for a regular filling. In these cases, we place small pediatric crowns. For front teeth, we use tooth-colored crowns made of composite material. To avoid unnecessary stress for your child, we usually place these crowns under general anesthesia.
Pulp Treatment in Baby Teeth (Pediatric Root Canal Therapy)
There are several treatment options, and at Zahn im Glück we take a gentle and childspecific approach. For molars, we usually recommend vital pulpotomy, where only the upper part of the nerve is removed – not the entire root canal system. This is a common and trusted method in pediatric dentistry that helps preserve the tooth without risking damage to the developing permanent tooth underneath. Full root canal treatments with long instruments are rarely necessary and may carry a risk of over-instrumentation.
That’s why we avoid them whenever possible. Still, any nerve treatment in baby teeth is a last resort to save the tooth and, in about 90% of cases, requires a stainless steel crown to stabilize the tooth afterward. This crown is the gold standard for protecting and preserving the treated tooth.

SindAre small black spots a sign of cavities?
Small black spots on teeth are often mistaken for cavities. In many cases, however, they are caused by a specific type of bacteria known as black stain. These stains are harmless, do not lead to tooth decay, and can be easily removed during a professional cleaning. Cavities, in fact, always begin with a white spot – a sign of early demineralization (known as white spot disease).
Your Questions – Our Answers on Baby Tooth Treatments at Zahn im Glück
We’re happy to support you with any concerns related to your child’s dental health.
Can a permanent tooth grow in normally after a baby tooth has had a root canal?
A root canal on a baby tooth is the final option to preserve it. The good news: the permanent tooth can still grow in without any problems. In some cases, a treated baby tooth may even fall out earlier, making room more easily for the adult tooth.
What material do you use for crowns on baby teeth?
For crowns on baby molars, we use stainless steel crowns at Zahn im Glück. These are very durable – especially for children who grind their teeth at night. Unlike more fragile ceramic crowns, stainless steel does not break, and is much better suited to the demands of children’s mouths. Stainless steel crowns are fully covered by statutory health insurance. They’re also among the best options on the market because they last long and require less tooth structure to be removed.
Do you use hypnosis during dental treatments?
Some children respond well to gentle, behavior-based methods that can help them enter a light trance-like state. However, this doesn’t work for every child – it depends on their personality and comfort level.
Will health insurance cover crowns for baby teeth?
Yes – statutory health insurance fully covers baby tooth crowns. Our patients with public insurance can choose between two filling materials at no additional cost. We’ll go over the options with you once we’ve assessed your child’s specific case. Privately insured patients or those with supplemental dental coverage usually receive composite (tooth-colored) fillings.
